Home of more than 350 shipwrecks (called the Graveyard of the Atlantic) and generations of wild ponies, Sable Island is 300 miles from mainland Nova Scotia.  It is thought to have come into existence after the last Ice Age, being formed by a glacial moraine.  It became a National Park Reserve in 2013 to preserve the island's frail ecology.  Visits are limited to under 200 persons per year.

Silent Sentinel - 18" x 36" - Not for Sale - 2601

Born in Vancouver, First Nations art has been around all my life.  I attended an elementary school called "Techumseh" named after an Shawnee chief; watched "How the Loon Got its Necklace" nearly every rainy school lunch; and was a 'First Nations' person in the 1958 school pageant celebrating BC's 100th birthday.  At York University I illustrated a project with an "Emily Carr-like" scene of decaying totem poles in the woods.  I feel First Nations art is part of my Canadian heritage even though I am not.  (Haida art is the most recognized of all the BC indigenous art forms.)  I designed my totem pole with the owl (stealthy, silent hunter), the frog (playful symbol of wealth), the bear (protector of the animal kingdom) and the salmon (sacred food source for humans, animals and the forests themselves).

Percé Rock, on the Gaspé Peninsula, is a massive block of limestone sitting in the Gulf of Saint at the town of Percé.  The rock is often clouded shrouded with clouds first thing in the morning.  It looks somewhat like a ship sailing into the distance.  It was named by Samuel de Champlain in 1607.  It has a 15 meter (49 ft. high) hole pierced in it.  More than 130 fossil types have been discovered in the rock..

There is a relatively new bridge (greater than 1 km long) crossing the Mackenzie River (a river than freezes during the winter).  In the past this crossing was made by ferry in the summer and ice bridge in the winter.  The highway system was closed for weeks while the river froze to a suitable depth for driving on and during the spring breakup.

Alexandra Falls, NWT - 36" x 24" - $600.00 - 2490

Millions of years ago plants and animals died and fell to be bottom of an inland sea, forming layers of limestone rock (some hard, some soft). In more modern times, the River Hay has carved away a 130ft deep gorge, four miles long. Alexandra Falls is a cap-rock falls, 103 feet high. The river flowing over the hard rock erodes the softer rock underneath. As more limestone is eroded, the cap breaks off and tumbles into the canyon. Alexandra Falls is eroding southward at a rate of 4 inches a year.

2012 was year of extreme season of “solar wind” (a stream of electrons, proton and helium nuclei). The solar wind usually strikes the outer atmosphere of the earth around the magnetic poles. The collision between solar wind and air causes the air molecules to radiate a glow. The green/yellow light occurs from oxygen atoms hit by solar wind. The red/blue/violet colours happen when nitrogen molecules meet the solar winds.
